Description
This is our latest modified Lionel transformer. These transformers were one of the last of the original design transformers Lionel made. They corrected a lot of issues many of their previous units had, for example on this unit the 2 accessory outputs (19 volts and 14 volts) are common to the outside rails. It will operate 2 trains simultaneously, but the whistle control only works with one of the train controls. The outer case is one of the last transformers made of Bakelite, which is very strong and attractive, But as usual we cannot leave well enough alone and have made several advanced modifications to this already nice unit.
- The internal circuit breaker has been replaced with a modern “manual reset” model that not only opens really fast, but also will stay open until you push the reset button on the back. The idea here is if you have a short circuit on your layout, this design allows you to find whatever problem caused the short circuit, fix it and then reset the breaker. This system prevents damaging your trains, and most important stops the issue of overheating the transformer.
- The original cord has been replaced, with a 3 wire cord with a grounding plug. Why? Because the transformers base is metal and like any other appliance or tool that you have the exposed metal should be grounded to stop any possibility of getting a shock. The internal transformer is mounted to the bottom case which is in turn connected to the outside metal case. Safety of our products is very important to us. This also makes phasing multiple transformers a breeze. Consequently please don’t even think about cutting the 3rd prong off. It also makes phasing transformers a breeze.
- The original rectifier has been changed with a modern, much more powerful diode. (Works way more better)
- The internal coils are also cleaned and polished.
- The power on bulb was a really weird one, so we removed it and installed an LED that will never burn out plus wired the LED is also an indicator which is designed to go out when the circuit breaker opens.
The transformer does not have reversing switches but we could add them above the speed controls, what do you think?
We put a lot of time and effort into these units, and does mean we have to charge more than buying one as is. Obviously we need to charge a little more than other similar units you may see.
