This sale is for a Lionel model TW model which will operate any train very nicely. This is ONE OF the most powerful single engine transformer Lionel ever made! This is also quite unique because it has 2 separate internal transformers, one for just running trains, the other for accessories. The second transformer works great for the new Lionel engines that work on a fixed voltage. Gives you the best of both worlds, One side a normal variable ac control for older stock and a separate internal transformer for your new engines, and ton’s o0f accessories. At the time this was made Lionel was also making a lot of accessories, many of which were power hungry. The idea was to not rub the train operation when running accessories, thus the totally separate internal transformers, for accessories. Quite clever.
As usual we were not totally satisfied with the original design so here is what we did.
- Change the Original Circuit breakers. The original breaker was designed to protect only the transformer itself, not anything after the outputs. They were very heavy duty and very slow to kick in. We replace these with our brand new fast break circuit breakers (one for the variable side, the other for the fixed output side), that will protect your trains exceptionally fast, and is a manual reset, so when you have an issue which opens the breaker it will stay open until you fix whatever caused the issue, then reset the breaker yourself.
- Replace the power cord with a modern 3 prong grounding cord, for safety and ease of phasing with other units
- Change the original rectifier to a modern heavy duty diode. Works way better.
- Clean the internal copper coils and adjust the contacts.
- We thoroughly check the outputs, not just for voltage, but under 2 different resistive loads.
